Barely after partition, Pakistan with British connivance, invaded the state of Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir. Upon its legal and moral accession to India, the Indian Army rushed to fdefend the state and engage the enemy in Jammu and Kashmir region. However, owing to tough terrain and conditions, the army was unable to send large enforcements to Ladakh, making it more vulnerable. The situation became extremely critical as the enemy juggernaut after capturing Gilgit-Baltistan, Skardu and Kargil were marching towards Leh, salivating at the thought of plundering and looting the ancient and culturally rich city. The enemy never realized that a 17-year old boy named Chhewang Rinchen would blunt their onslaught. Operating in tough conditions and despite lacking proper military training, it was the love for his land and the firece warrior spirit within him that motivated this daring young boy to lead a force of just 28 poorly trained local volunteers which prevented the enemy's advance towards Leh and the Nubra valley. For his extraordinary tactical acumen, raw bravery and inspiring leadership under adverse conditions, he became an enduring icon as the 'Lion of Ladakh'. An Ode to the Warrior Future generations of Ladakhis owe a debt of gratitude to young Rinchen and his Nonos in protecting Ladakh from the enemy invasion. Had this young warrior not answered to the call of duty, this history and culture would have been lost to not only Ladakh and Bharat but to the world. There comes a time during critical phases of historical events where destiny is about to be altered. It is then that a single warrior awakens to ensure history unfolds on the right side. This is where Chhewang Rinchen stood firm in the face of heavy odds and made a mark forever carved in history.
